External Wall Insulation
Wrap your home in a high-performance thermal layer. Reduce heat loss by up to 45 percent and transform your property exterior.
What is External Wall Insulation?
External wall insulation (EWI) involves fitting a layer of insulation material to the outside walls of your property, which is then covered with a protective render or cladding finish. This creates a continuous thermal envelope around your home, dramatically reducing heat loss through the walls, which accounts for up to 35 percent of total heat loss in an uninsulated property.
EWI is particularly effective for solid-wall properties — typically those built before the 1930s — which cannot benefit from cavity wall insulation. Beyond its thermal performance, external wall insulation also refreshes the external appearance of your property, protects the underlying brickwork from weathering, and helps eliminate damp and condensation issues.
How It Works
Retrofit Assessment
A PAS 2035 Retrofit Assessor surveys your property to determine the appropriate insulation specification, ventilation requirements, and any preparatory work needed.
Design and Planning
Our Retrofit Coordinator develops a detailed design package, selecting the insulation system, render finish, and colour to meet both thermal performance targets and your aesthetic preferences.
Preparation and Scaffolding
Scaffolding is erected and the existing wall surface is prepared. This may include repairs to brickwork, adjustment of external fittings, and installation of starter tracks.
Insulation and Render Application
Insulation boards are mechanically fixed to the external walls, reinforced with mesh, and finished with a durable weatherproof render. Typical installation takes one to three weeks depending on property size.
Benefits of External Wall Insulation
- Reduce heat loss through walls by up to 45 percent
- Lower heating bills and improved EPC rating
- Eliminate cold spots, damp, and condensation
- Refresh and modernise your property exterior
- Protect underlying brickwork from weather damage
- Fully funded under HUG2 and GBIS for eligible households
- 25-year system guarantee on most EWI systems
- PAS 2030 and PAS 2035 compliant installation
Is EWI Right for Me?
External wall insulation is ideal for solid-wall properties that cannot have cavity wall insulation installed. It is also suitable for some non-traditional construction types. If your home has solid walls and you experience cold rooms, high heating bills, or damp issues, EWI could be the solution. Many homeowners receive fully funded EWI through the Home Upgrade Grant or Great British Insulation Scheme.
Relevant Accreditations
All EWI installations follow PAS 2030 standards for installation quality and PAS 2035 for whole-house retrofit design. Work is lodged with TrustMark for consumer protection.
